Inflexibility May Be Hardwired In Those With Autism: Kids with autism have less flexible brains, researchers say in a new study that may help explain why switching from rest to a task can be particularly difficult for those on the spectrum. Brain scans of children with autism indicate that there’s little difference in how key networks connect no matter if they’re at rest or engaged in an activity, according to findings published this week in the journal Cerebral Cortex.

UC Davis MIND Institute study finds association between maternal exposure to agricultural pesticides, autism in offspring: Pregnant women who lived in close proximity to fields and farms where chemical pesticides were applied experienced a two-thirds increased risk of having a child with autism spectrum disorder or other developmental delay, a study by researchers with the UC Davis MIND Institute has found. The associations were stronger when the exposures occurred during the second and third trimesters of the women’s pregnancies. June 22, 2014

Autism now affects 1 in 68 children; 1 in 42 boys: The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued the newest autism prevalence statistics.  For children born in 2002, the prevalence of autism was 1 in 68; 1 in 42 boys.  Almost 60,000 US 12 year-olds likely have autism. Thirty years ago, autism affected 1 in 2,500 children; there has been a 37-fold increase. You can download the report here.

Sensory Therapy Might Work for Kids With Autism: Children with autism can benefit from a type of therapy that helps them become more comfortable with the sounds, sights and sensations of their daily surroundings, a small new study suggests.

'Mixing' of Senses More Common in Autism Study: People with autism are more likely to have a condition called synesthesia -- a "mixing of the senses" -- a small new study finds. For example, people may see colors when they hear sounds, or notice different tastes when they hear musical notes.
